When we are asked about a full house refurbishment by a client it is often the kitchen that leads the discussions. A large kitchen diner has become so important as the focus of the house that its location is often our start point.
Changing the layout of your home
This is what happened when we worked on a home refurbishment in Tewin in Hertfordshire recently. At the start of the project we spent time in the house with our client, walking around and understanding how the space could be reconfigured to suit modern family living.
We quickly identified the lounge as the perfect location for the new kitchen due to the natural light pouring in from a large bay window and the potential to extend the room at the other end to include space for a dining table and chairs. We could also make use of some original features, for example the cooker could be, with some adjustments, fitted into the old chimney breast. We were as excited about the possibilities as our client and as we continued around the downstairs we could see how a utility cupboard could be fitted under the stairs and a completely new downstairs toilet could be incorporated as part of the extension.
Planning a kitchen
Our client wanted a colourful and bright kitchen that was unfussy but with plenty of open shelving that could be styled with plants and artworks. We worked together, designing the kitchen layout from cupboards and island to seating and dining space. One important point was that the kitchen should be easy to clean so we went for handleless cupboards and drawers which are practical and used in many contemporary kitchens. A high-quality wood floor was installed throughout the ground floor to continue this theme.
Choosing light fittings
The joy of a total refurbishment is that the electrics can be considered at the start of the project and installed so that lighting is positioned correctly. We used down lights over the island and hob to brighten working areas while recess lighting was included in the shelving to create the required mood. Wall and over cupboard lighting added some gentle light to enhance the interior. Plenty of power sockets were planned including for the island, hidden discretely under the overhang.
The choice of fittings can make all the difference to the overall impact of a kitchen. High quality, modern light switches and fittings were chosen in black to coordinate with the taps. These fittings were then used over the rest of the refurbishment to bring a sense of cohesion to the interior design of the whole house.
A beautiful home refurbishment in Tewin
The craftsmanship of the whole project shines out, not only in the fittings but also in the expert installation. A combination of quality materials and skilled professionals is what makes a refurbishment work so well.
