Where to find more space. That age-old problem is now more urgent as working from home has become routine for many people. But it’s not only space that is the issue. To work efficiently the space put aside for working needs to be quiet, well-lit and warm, preferably with plenty of storage space as well as a desk and comfortable office chair. It may also need its own entrance. This was the challenge for this home office in St Albans.

An extension or a garage conversion?

At Abbey Building we rather like these challenges and have worked with many customers, assessing their existing home and exploring the possibilities of creating a bespoke office space for them. Sometimes this can mean making use of some redundant space (if you are lucky enough to have some), but more often we look at the possibility of a single storey extension or at converting an existing garage. These larger spaces give us an opportunity to design and build something which will work perfectly for the way you like to work.

Converting your loft space into a study

Another area with potential is the loft space. This is often a large space which can be transformed into something quite special. Typically, we will arrange a survey to see if your loft is suitable and all being well will draw up some plans to create a stylish working environment. The beauty of a loft conversion is that your work area can out of the way of the rest of the house and family life and can even have extra sound insulation fitted.

A loft conversion in St Albans

This is the route we took recently for a customer in St Albans although here the study was still very much part of the living space in the house. Their home was a new build and as such had been skilfully designed to make good use of all available space. The interior design and finish of the build were faultless so it was important that any work we carried out would maintain that same high quality.

We identified some roof space which could be converted into the perfect study area, creating a mezzanine above the sitting room. The new staircase needed to look in keeping with the rest of the house so we fitted an oak staircase leading from the floor below. The glass and oak stair balustrade continued from the staircase along the study, looking down onto living space below. Oak was then used on the new doors and shelving.

The home office in St Albans

The result was a very smart working area which, although separate from the rest of the house, was still very much a part of it. The high-quality finish is on view from the room below and enhances the interior and sense of space.
